Did you know your skincare routine should adapt to the changing needs of your skin as you age? Your skin naturally changes as you age due to factors like sun exposure, genetics, and lifestyle. Developing a consistent skincare routine early on can help prevent future problems and maintain healthy, youthful-looking skin. We spoke to our expert Dr Mikki Singh, Founder and Medical Director, Bodycraft Clinics, who explained skincare measures to follow according to your age. According to a 2023 study, as skin ages, alterations in its barrier become evident, manifesting in wrinkles, uneven tone, diminished elasticity, and thinning. Numerous factors contribute to this process. While skin ageing naturally progresses with age, both internal factors like genetics and diseases, and external factors, such as ultraviolet radiation, air pollution, smoking, and alcohol consumption, accelerate this ageing process. Skincare In Your 20s Caring for your skin in your 20s is mostly about establishing good habits and preventive care to ensure your skin remains healthy as you age. Here’s what you should consider, as listed by Dr Singh: Preventative Care: Focus on prevention with a good moisturiser and daily sunscreen to protect against UV damage Cleansing: Use a gentle cleanser to remove impurities without stripping the skin Hydration: Hydrating serums with hyaluronic acid can keep skin plump and hydrated Eye Cream: Start using an eye cream to prevent early signs of ageing around the eyes Skincare In your 30s “As you enter your 30s, your skin starts to show more visible signs of ageing, such as fine lines and a decrease in elasticity. The focus of skincare in this decade is on maintaining a healthy skin barrier, addressing the first signs of ageing, and boosting skin’s radiance”, highlighted Dr Singh. Anti-Ageing Products: Add retinoids as they help in cell turnover and improve skin texture and tone Antioxidants: Use serums with antioxidants like vitamin C to combat free radical damage and for brighter skin Moisturising: Upgrade your moisturisers to ones that support skin barrier function and prevent moisture loss Skincare In Your 40s Dr Singh added, “In your 40s, your skin may begin to show more noticeable signs of ageing, such as deeper wrinkles, loss of firmness, and increased dryness. This is largely due to the natural decrease in collagen production and other age-related changes.” Nourishment: Look for products that contain peptides and ceramides to nourish the skin and improve elasticity Brightening Agents: To combat dullness, incorporate products with niacinamide and glycolic acid Eye Care: Intensify eye care with products targeting puffiness, crow’s feet, and dark circles  In your 50s and beyond “In your 50s and beyond, the focus of skincare shifts significantly towards deep hydration, intensive repair, and increased nourishment to address the more pronounced signs of ageing. Hormonal changes, particularly around menopause, can also lead to drier, thinner, and less elastic skin”, said Dr Singh. Hydration and Repair: Use richer creams that contain lipids and emollients to hydrate and fortify the skin barrier Firming Treatments: Products with collagen-promoting ingredients like retinol or peptide complexes can help firm the skin Sun Protection: Continue with vigilant sun protection as the skin becomes more susceptible to sun damage with age General Guidelines for All Ages Dr Singh shared general guideline for all ages irrespective of your age: Sunscreen: Daily use of sunscreen with at least SPF 30 is crucial to protect from UV rays, prevent premature ageing, and lower skin cancer risk. Gentle Cleansing: Choose cleansers that match your skin type without causing dryness or irritation. Regular Dermatologist Visits: Regular check-ups can help address specific skin concerns and catch any serious issues early.
