We’ve all dreamt of having long, shiny, strong, and dense hair. We’ve also probably tried everything, from diet to expensive hair-care products to supplements, to achieve those luscious locks. In addition, some people also believe that shaving our heads completely can also help grow back thicker and stronger hair. Our elders have also suggested it at some point in time, especially when we were younger. The question is: does this trick really work? Shaving your head is a big decision, and weighing all your possibilities is crucial. We spoke to Dr Monica Bambroo, Head Dermatologist and Cosmetologist at Artemis Hospital, Gurugram, to help clear the air and to understand whether the practice does benefit us in any way. According to him, it can also be practical for individuals experiencing hair loss due to conditions like alopecia or undergoing chemotherapy. However, the doctor shares that those who have sensitive scalps or certain skin conditions might find shaving uncomfortable or irritating. In addition, individuals with a history of severe sunburns should be cautious, as a shaved head exposes the scalp to direct sunlight. But eventually, the decision to shave one’s head depends on factors like personal preference, lifestyle, and individual health considerations. Can Shaving Your Head Make Your Hair Grow Back Thicker? According to Dr Bambroo, the claim that shaving your head can help your hair grow back thicker is actually a myth. In fact, it has been debunked by researchers since 1928, when a clinical trial showed that shaving had no effect on hair growth, according to a 2007 study published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ). Dr Bambroo says, “Shaving your head doesn’t change the thickness or density of your hair. The myth possibly stems from the fact that shaved hair often feels coarser initially because it’s cut straight across, whereas natural hair tapers at the ends.” On the contrary, hair thickness is actually determined by genetics and hormonal factors and not by cutting, she notes. Get regular scalp massages that help improve circulation and stimulate hair follicles. Avoid excessive heat styling and harsh chemical treatments, which can damage hair and lead to thinning. Use gentle, sulphate-free shampoos and conditioners to prevent breakage. Incorporate protein treatments to strengthen hair strands. Consider taking topical treatments like minoxidil, approved by the FDA, to promote hair growth.  It is also important to consult a dermatologist or trichologist to receive any hair-care recommendations based on your specific needs, Dr Bambroo advises. Conclusion Shaving your head is a personal choice. It is sometimes all about maintenance and convenience. Some people may also opt for it due to medical reasons. However, to think that it may help your hair grow back thicker is a false thought and a misconception. This is why speaking to your dermatologist or trichologist may help you rethink your decision and resort to evidence-based hair-care strategies that may actually help your hair grow back stronger and healthier.Read NextAchieving Healthy Hair: Here Are DIY Shikakai Masks For Hair RejuvenationDisclaimer All possible measures have been taken to ensure accuracy, reliability, timeliness and authenticity of the information; however Onlymyhealth.com does not take any liability for the same.
