With the bright rays of sun comes the scorching heat and humidity in the month of May. Hot summers can not only dehydrate you but also can damage your skin leading to premature ageing, dark spots, and can even cause cancer. Thus, it is crucial that you take utmost care of your skin during this hot season.  To understand how to protect your skin from damage, OnlyMyHealth interacted with Dr Aparna Santhanam, Dermatologist and Skin Care Expert at ITC Dermafique. Here are some tips given by Dr Santhanam, that will help you keep your skin healthy and glowing this summer. 1. Wet Wipes Summers can be harsh on your skin, and it’s essential to take care of it. The way chilled water gives relief to your dried up throat, wet wipes can similarly soothe your skin when the scorching heat is giving you a hard time. One of the best ways to keep your skin clean and fresh during summers is by carrying a pack of wet wipes with you. Wet wipes are an excellent solution for quickly refreshing and cleansing your skin, especially when you’re on the go. “Wet wipes are perfect for wiping away sweat, dirt, and bacteria that can accumulate on your skin during summers. They are gentle on your skin and have a pleasant fragrance that leaves you feeling refreshed. You can use them to wipe your face, neck, arms, and any other part of your body that needs cleaning,” Dr Santhanam said. She also advised to make sure to look for ones that are gentle on your skin and free from harsh chemicals. Avoid wipes that contain alcohol, fragrances, or preservatives as they can irritate your skin and cause dryness. Also read: Home Remedies To Soothe Summer Skin Problems In Babies 2. Sunscreen Protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays is crucial, but not all sunscreens are equally effective or contain similar ingredients. According to Dr Santhanam, it is essential to choose a sunscreen with Full Light Technology during summers. “This technology protects your skin against UVA and UVB rays, as well as harmful infrared rays and visible light, preventing tanning, persistent pigmentation, and premature ageing caused by sun exposure. It is also recommended to select a super-light formula with a feather-light texture that absorbs easily.” As sunscreen use increases during summer, it is important to maintain consistent reapplication habits. Dr Santhanam emphasises that although sunscreen provides excellent protection, its stability is finite, highlighting the need for consistent and repetitive application to ensure optimal defence against harmful UV rays. During intense exposure, physical screening methods like umbrellas, hats, and parasols can be used to augment the application. 3. Hydration Staying hydrated is the key to every problem that occurs due to heat and hot summers. The more you keep yourself hydrated, your skin will not go dry and will remain healthy and shiny. WebMD says, “Your skin needs water to give it strength and elasticity.” Water not only extinguishes your thirst but also makes your skin healthier.  4. Moisturise Daily Moisturising is crucial to keep your skin soft and supple during the summer months. Choose a lightweight, oil-free moisturiser that won’t clog your pores. Dr Santhanman advised to choose a lightweight moisturiser suitable for your skin. Apply it after cleansing and toning your skin and reapply throughout the day if necessary.
