Does Face Waxing Make Your Skin Loose? Here’s What Dermatologist Says

One doubt that resolves around face waxing is that it can make your skin loose. You must have heard other women or the beautician/aesthetician aiding you in a salon warn you about the repercussions of waxing your face. To know if there’s any truth to this statement or if it’s just another myth, the Onlymyhealth team spoke to Dr Ajay Deshpande, Senior Dermatologist, Sahyadri Super Speciality Hospital, Deccan Gymkhana, Pune. Does Face Waxing Make Your Skin Loose Over Time? “When done correctly, face waxing usually doesn’t result in skin being looser. On the other hand, frequent waxing may cause the skin to momentarily stretch, particularly if the skin is not kept taut throughout the procedure,” said Dr Deshpande.  He said that waxing has less of an impact on skin loosening than genetics, sun exposure, and natural ageing. But keep in mind that “stretching repeatedly over a long period may cause a little loss of elasticity, especially in people whose skin is ageing or inherently less elastic,” he added. Risks Of Face Waxing In addition to making your skin loose, there can be many other side effects of waxing your face. Dr Deshpande listed: Your skin may become strained from frequent waxing.  Your skin may get increasingly sensitive to the waxing process over time, making each application more painful and irritating.  Frequent waxing may also result in ingrown hairs, which can be very unpleasant because they grow back into the skin instead of out.  You may see darker pigmentation in areas of your skin where waxing is frequent if you have darker skin.  However, these effects vary depending on the skin type. “Usually, all skin types can experience side effects such as temporary redness, swelling, and small bumps known as folliculitis,” said Dr Deshpande. He shared the effect of regular face waxing on different skin types: Sensitive Skin: Sensitive skin is prone to redness, irritation, and even welts or burns if the wax is too hot or if irritative ingredients are in the wax. Acne-Prone Skin: Such skin is at risk of worsening existing acne or triggering new breakouts through irritation and pulling during waxing, which can open pores and facilitate the spread of bacteria. Dry or Mature Skin: This type of skin is more susceptible to tearing, irritation, and inflammation because the skin may be less supple and more fragile. Hyperpigmentation-prone skin: This type of skin particularly in darker skin types may develop post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation as it heals from the trauma of waxing. “These negative effects emphasise the need to think carefully about how often you wax and, if you start experiencing problems, to switch to more moderate hair removal techniques,” suggested Dr Deshpande. Make These 3 Packs At Home To Get Rid Of Facial Hair Safer Alternatives To Face Waxing If you’re looking for kinder alternatives to waxing for removing facial hair, Dr Deshpande listed some good choices: Threading: Threading is a superb option that involves a professional using thread to delicately pluck hairs, which is great for sensitive skin as it avoids chemicals and heat.  Laser hair removal: For those seeking a more permanent solution, laser hair removal might be ideal; it uses light to significantly reduce hair growth and works best when there’s a clear contrast between your hair and skin colour.  Electrolysis: Electrolysis, although a bit more involved, permanently removes hair by destroying each follicle with an electric current and works for all skin and hair types.  Depilatory Creams: Depilatory creams can dissolve the hair just below the skin’s surface quickly and painlessly. Just make sure to do a patch test first to prevent any allergic reactions. While face waxing is a popular hair removal method, concerns about its impact on skin elasticity are valid. While occasional waxing is unlikely to cause lasting looseness, frequent sessions or improper technique can contribute to a temporary loss of elasticity, especially as we age. Dr Deshpande concluded that consider your skin type and desired results when choosing a hair removal method. If you’re unsure, consult a dermatologist for personalised advice.
