How do anti-chafing products work?
“Anti-chafing products work by forming a protective barrier on your skin, which prevents friction and the resulting skin irritation, also called chafing,” explains Carmen Castilla, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and director of clinical research at New York Dermatology Group. Friction often happens when people are walking, biking, running, or doing any other kind of repetitive movement where body parts rub against each other or your gear. Examples might be your inner thighs chafing when you take a long walk on a sweaty summer day, or your inner arm chafing as it rubs against your backpack straps on a hike.
What should I look for in anti-chafing products?
Dr. Castilla recommends looking for ingredients that moisturize and help make the skin slippery to minimize friction such as glycerin, petrolatum, shea butter, and coconut oil. “Calming ingredients such as aloe vera or lanolin can also be helpful,” she adds.
